How we wound up right opposite Jabal-an-Noor, subhaanallaah!!

20061018(004)

By Rasha and Rida

It was funny that although we weren't planning to, we found ourselves right in front of Jabal-an-Noor in Makkah this time! We were all tired out after the long journey and had been told to park our car right on the outskirts of Makkah and to take a cab to the Haram and go for Umrah b/z there were so many people in Makkah this year that there was no more space and the hotels were all full...but there is no other explanation except that Allaah's Qadr smiled on us and we found a suitable furnished apartment at the very first place we asked!

It was quite dark when we went in and it was only by chance that the Ed opened the window and saw that the huge mountain in front looked familiar -- even we recalled the picture that we'd seen in our geography books -- it was really the Mountain of Light!!

This was the place where the Prophetصلىالله عليه وسلمused to come and spend time in prayer during Ramadhaan...this is the place where the Cave of Hira is, where Jibreel came to the Prophetصلىالله عليه وسلمand asked him to "Read" and revealed the Verse Iqra. It was so exciting and thrilling to be so close to the first place of revelation, especially on a night that could be the Laylat-al-Qadr...

Visual Proof: For all the people who didn't believe that the answer to Q. 20 was really "all of us, all of the above" (Ed: and for all those who cast aspersions on the Ed's ability to make edible spinach pakoras and cheese samosas)

All claims on this blog are backed by solid evidence... when in doubt, don't hesitate to ask for proofs, in shaa Allaah :)))

system shutdown: the body has a mind of it's own

Among the many life choices that are lost to Mums, one is the option to call in sick at work.
For Mums like me, allowing oneself to feel/fall sick is a luxury in the league of reading the 'paper in peace or going for a pedicure. But sometimes, the body ignores the tyranny of the will, develops a mind of it's own and issues a warning: the system has been attacked by an unidentifiable virus and is going to shut down...and proceeds to do just that before it can be willed back to work.
Alhamdulillaah, the sickness came at the end of Ramadhaan, when we had all safely returned home, after the best 'Eid of our lives.
Alhamdulillaah, it came at the end of a month of completely inexplicable, out-of-the-blue afflictions -- not just your ordinary habitual nicks, cuts and burns, but bizarre things like getting hit in the mouth by a falling tape measure when reaching for something over the almirah...and looking like a Gummi Bear for a couple of days...
Each time the fever receded in a tide of perspiration, I thought of the hadeeth : "Narrated Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri and Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with them: The Prophetصلىالله عليه وسلم said: "No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allaah expiates some of his sins for that."

Which of the Lord's blessings would you deny?

PS: many thanks to all the people who wrote in...please keep us in your prayers, in shaa Allaah.

when 1 night = 1000 months

When the Night Equals a Thousand
Available in English German French
It was narrated that in the days that Musa ('alayhi salaam) wandered with Bani Israel in the desert an intense drought befell them. Together, they raised their hands towards the heavens praying for the blessed rain to come. Then, to the astonishment of Musa ('alayhi salaam) and all those watching, the few scattered clouds that were in the sky vanished, the heat poured down, and the drought intensified.
It was revealed to Musa that there was a sinner amongst the tribe of Bani Israel who had disobeyed Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) for more than forty years of his life. “Let him separate himself from the congregation,” Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) told Musa (Alahi salaam). “Only then shall I shower you all with rain.”
Musa ('alayhi salaam) then called out to the throngs of humanity, “There is a person amongst us who has disobeyed Allah for forty years. Let him separate himself from the congregation and only then shall we be rescued from the drought.” That man, waited, looking left and right, hoping that someone else would step forward, but no one did. Sweat poured forth from his brow and he knew that he was the one.
The man knew that if he stayed amongst the congregation all would die of thirst and that if he stepped forward he would be humiliated for all eternity.
He raised his hands with a sincerity he had never known before, with a humility he had never tasted, and as tears poured down on both cheeks he said: “O Allah, have mercy on me! O Allah, hide my sins! O Allah, forgive me!”
As Musa ('alayhi salaam) and the people of Bani Israel awaited for the sinner to step forward, the clouds hugged the sky and the rain poured. Musa ('alayhi salaam) asked Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala), “O Allah, you blessed us with rain even though the sinner did not come forward.” And Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) replied, “O Musa, it is for the repentance of that very person that I blessed all of Bani Israel with water.”
Musa ('alayhi salaam), wanting to know who this blessed man was, asked, “Show him to me O Allah!” Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) replied, “O Musa, I hid his sins for forty years, do you think that after his repentance I shall expose him?”
Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) revealed the Qur’an in the most blessed month; the month of Ramadan, the month in which the Qur’an was sent down.On the most blessed night, the Grand night: Laylatul Qadr; “Verily, we revealed the Qur’an on the night of Qadr.”
Ibn Jareer narrates, on the authority of Mujaahid that there was a man from Bani Israel who used to spend the night in prayer. Then in the morning he would fight the enemy in the Way of Allah during the day, until the evening and he did this for a thousand months.
And so Allah revealed the Surah: “Verily, We sent it down in the night of Al-Qadr” until the verse “The night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months” That is, standing in prayer on that night is better than the actions of that man.
Sufyaan ath-Thawree reports, on the authority of Mujaahid (also), that the night of Al-Qadr being better than a thousand months means that the good deeds performed on it, fasting on it, and standing in prayer on it are better than a thousand months’ good deeds, prayers and fasting. (Narrated by Ibn Jareer)
It is reported from Abu Hurairah that he said: “When the month of Ramadan came, the Messenger of Allah said: ‘The month of Ramadan has come, a blessed month in which Allah has made it obligatory for you to fast; in it the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained. In it is a night better than a thousand months, whoever loses the benefit of it has lost something irreplaceable.’” (Narrated by Imam Ahmad and An-Nasaa'i).
It is reported on the authority of Abu Hurairah, that Allah’s Messenger (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Whoever stood in prayer on the night of Al-Qadr, in faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, he will have all of his previous sins forgiven.” (Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim).
This one night surpasses the value of 30,000 nights. The sincere believer who worries day and night about his sins and phases of neglect in his life patiently awaits the onset of Ramadan. During it he hopes to be forgiven by Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) for past sins, knowing that the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) promised that all who bear down during the last ten days shall have all their sins forgiven. To achieve this, the believer remembers the Prophet’s (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) advice in different sayings wherein he used words like “seek”, “pursue”, “search” and “look hard” for Laylatul Qadr.
Laylatul Qadr is the most blessed night. A person who misses it has indeed missed a great amount of good. The Mu’min should search for it in the last ten nights of Ramadan, passing the nights in worship and obedience.
For those who catch the opportunity, their gift is that of past sins wiped away.
The Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) illustrated for us some of the things we should be doing on this Grand Night. From his blessed Sunnah we find the following:read the complete khutbah here

"...stars of a different sort.."

Young Muslims Compete in a Different Kind of Recital
By HASSAN M. FATTAH
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Oct. 8 — With its big-budget sets, promise of large cash prizes and surly judges who grimace at the slightest slip-up, the contest might seem like yet another made-for-TV talent show. But the competition being beamed by satellite across the Muslim world this Ramadan is no “American Idol.”
The winners, judged the best at reciting the Koran from memory, won’t become the objects of breathless gossip in glossy magazines. Instead, they will become stars of a different sort, earning the respect of devout Muslims and invitations to recite the text during religious gatherings.
The competition, the Dubai International Holy Koran Award, is open to males aged 21 and younger, and this year more than 80 young Muslim boys and men faced off in more than two weeks of nightly performances that end Tuesday.
The contestants came from around the world to represent their countries, including Iran, Iraq, Brazil, Australia and the United States.Dubai’s ruler, Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, sponsors the competition, one of the most prestigious Koran recitation contests in the world, to encourage young Muslims to understand the essence of their faith. He provides the equivalent of nearly $700,000 in prize money, including a top prize of almost $70,000.
The contest, in its 10th year, is one befitting a place like Dubai, with its penchant for glitz and glamour. Dubai marketers have plastered the city with ads that push it as must-see TV, and it is popular enough that the awards ceremony attracts dignitaries and prominent personalities. The scene inside the competition hall is reminiscent of classic American spelling bees. The young contestants, primed from years of study, squirm in their seats while the audience sits in hushed anxiety.“This is the Olympics of Koran reading,” said Ahmad al Suwiedi, head of the competition’s organizing committee. “So whoever goes up there on that stage has to make us and his country proud.”
Late Thursday night, 10-year-old Khubaib Muhammad walked on stage in his tennis shoes and traditional Kenyan dress, sat in an oversize chair that engulfed his slight frame and prepared for his chance at fame and fortune.Khubaib has spent hours each day for the past three years memorizing the Koran. He competed in local reading competitions in his native Nairobi to qualify for this contest. “It was hard work, but ultimately it was worth it because I got here,” he said just before taking the stage. “I’m not nervous. I’m ready and prepared.”
Being prepared means being ready to recite the Koran in Arabic — starting anywhere the judges want and for as long as they want. The judges choose the section at random, recite the beginning, then expect the contestant to pick up where they left off. The contestants must know the text well enough to quickly recognize the section the judge is reading.
After Khubaib took the stage, one of the five judges began reciting text. At the judge’s signal, Khubaib took over, his high-pitched voice filling the crowded recital hall. For the next 15 minutes, the boy carried on the recitation by heart, his eyes closed in deep concentration, his legs swinging several inches off the ground. At one point, one of the judges rang the bell, indicating Khubaib had made a mistake. For a moment, the boy was silent, but he quickly corrected himself and continued.
To Muslims, the Koran is the word of God as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. In the contest, it is supposed to be read in a melodic chant that follows rules known as tajweed, which dictate what letters should be emphasized, slurred or silent. The best reciters are legendary, their tapes sold across the Muslim world. This year’s Dubai champion will ostensibly join their ranks someday.During a reporter’s visit last week, the young men exhibited a camaraderie built around faith, leaving the problems of the region outside the performance hall. “This is a positive thing happening in a difficult world,” said Ahmad Nasser Rabbah, 15, a third-generation Brazilian.
The contestants are judged first on their accuracy to the text, then on the quality of their reading according to the rules of tajweed, and finally on the quality of their voices. Some of the readers, including Khubaib, do not speak Arabic, but have memorized the text by rote.
Ahmed Khorshid, 15, who represents the United States, was impressed by his competitors’ skill level. Ahmed, who lives in Oak Lawn, Ill., said that he initially balked when he was invited to Dubai; he did not want to miss out on his football games. But he decided to give up his position as running back at his school’s homecoming game to come.“All my friends and sheiks will be watching me on TV back home, and I intend to make them proud,” he said.By Friday, it had become increasingly obvious who the likely winners would be, with the contestants from Nigeria and Saudi Arabia leading the pack. “I was really nervous as I walked up to the stage, but as soon as I sat down all the fear was gone,” said Mohammed Lawa Muhammed, 20, the Nigerian contestant.
For all the dreams of scholarly fame, few of the contestants said they will seek a life as a cleric. Mr. Muhammed aspires to be a doctor. Ahmed Khorshid, the American, wants to be a basketball player.Khubaib Muhammad, the Kenyan, hopes to be a pilot for the Red Cross. “I would like to win,” he said. “It would be a blessing from God.”

Quran award's youngest entrant charms audience
Gulf News
Dubai: The Dubai International Holy Quran Award's youngest contender, 11-year-old Australian Abdullah Al Zahabi, delighted the audience on Friday evening as he won hearts with his intonation of the Quran.
Brett Young, Third Secretary of the Australian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, praised Abdullah's performance at the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The young contender is Moroccan by birth.
"Abdullah has made Australians proud of him. I am envious of his skills and impressive performance. He is talented and courageous because participating in such an event is difficult and requires hard work."
The senior Australian diplomat said the Dubai International Holy Quran Award (DIHQA) was an interesting and important event and a "good combination between the East and the West."
He said he did not believe there was a religious gap between the East and the West citing "the active Muslim community and how Islam is an important part of Australia."
"Muslims in Australia are devoted to their religion and practise it," he said.
Friday evening witnessed sharp competition among the seven contenders who represented the UAE, Australia, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Holland and Niger.
Egyptian Consul General Ebrahim Hafez who attended the event said: "The DIHQA has become such an international pilgrimage for tens of young Muslims who come to intone Allah's book besides the scholars who deliver valuable and constructive seminars about Islam and the Quran."
"The DIHQA helps introduce and promote Islam and its thought and culture to others," added Hafez.
Ikbarou Mohammad, Acting First Consular at the Mauritanian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, said: "The DIHQA develops annually and has become a landmark foundation in the Islamic nation that's longed for by millions of Muslims."
Yousuf Al Mutawa, First Attorney General in the Dubai Public Prosecution, said the DIHQA was a unique event that guided Muslims.
He called for more cooperation and coordination between the DIHQA and similar contests in the Islamic world "to benefit the young generations and serve Allah's Book."
